Why Choose the Best Office Desk Lamp for Eyes?

A freelancer working at his desk with an office desk lamp

You might be doubting whether it’s really necessary to get a desk lamp if you already have  overhead lighting in your home office. It’s not just an overindulgence: desk lamps are actually better for your eyes.

Staring at a screen all day causes tired eyes at the best of times, and doing it with glare will only make the problem worse.

Light from above our heads is more likely to cause glare — especially when it reflects against a screen, like your computer. In turn, this can cause eye strain, since the pupils will stay dilated for too long.

The good news? Using a lamp minimizes this problem as long, as you don’t position it so the light shines directly into your eyesight.

Of course, the ideal situation is to work when there’s natural light from the sun. But, if you’re anything like me, you want to work from home so that you can be more flexible in your hours. Or maybe you live somewhere with only a few hours of natural light a day and it’s just not possible to have the ideal situation all day.

Either way, a desk lamp is the most practical solution for most of us.

How to Choose the Office Desk Lamp that’s Best for You

It’s all very well to say that a desk lamp is helpful, but there are literally hundreds to choose from (trust us…we’ve done some hunting). So what do you need to consider when choosing a lamp ?

The color temperature of your light – daylight vs warm white light

You’ve probably noticed that bulbs emit slightly different types of light. In the world of lighting, this is known as color temperature but it has nothing to do with how hot the bulb can get. Instead, it’s a way to measure the warmth and coolness of light in terms of the bulb’s color.

The color temperatures of white can range from warm white right up to daylight. “Warm white” is the yellow homely glow that most standard light bulbs emit whereas “daylight” is on the opposite end and is very bright.

Daylight bulbs are great if you need to stay alert and productive, so this color temperature is a good option if you’re burning the midnight oil. But, be warned, the light might keep you awake so if you prefer to keep your sleep cycle intact, maybe a warm yellow hue (white light) would be better.

The type of light bulb – Fluorescent vs LED

In addition to the light looking different, it can come from different types of bulbs. Fluorescent lights used to make up the bulk of the market and are the traditional “light bulb” that most of us are familiar with.

But nowadays most desk lamps use LEDs (light-emitting diodes) thanks to the advantages it brings. LED lamps are usually more expensive to buy upfront, but they’re cheaper to run than halogen lamps since they use less energy. They’re also safer — halogen lamps use more energy, so they can be dangerously hot to touch.

When considering a new desk lamp, it might well be worth it in the long run to pay a bit more for an LED lamp. Also, another advantage is that you can often adjust the brightness of LED desk lamps which will help your sleep cycle and productivity.

Swing arm versus fixed height or position

A desk lamp with a swing arm can be extremely useful if you’re working on your screen and on paper. You can adjust the height and the angle of the light depending on the time of day and where you’re needing light on your desk. A swing arm desk lamp can also be extremely useful if you have a small desk as some of them come with clamps instead of a stand.

Of course, it’s always great to get something that you like. So, if you prefer the more old school desk lamp look versus the modern LED fully-adjustable, cell-phone charging lamp like the one above, we completely understand! Get a desk lamp that appeals to you and will motivate you to put in the hours.

Frequently Asked Questions about Desk Lamps

During our research, there were two questions that came up quite frequently about desk lamps. Here they are:

How tall should a desk lamp be?

The height of your desk lamp is ultimately a matter of preference, but given the problems with overhead lighting, you don’t want a lamp that’s too tall. Generally, between 26 and 34 inches is the right height.

Tip: Aim for the bottom of the lamp shade to be the same level as your eye line.

How many lumens or watts should a desk lamp have?

Assuming you’re using your desk mostly for tasks like writing, reading, and using a computer, around 450 lumens (or 45 watts) will be enough to give you perfect vision. However, there are some extra considerations to make.

The older you are, the more lumens you need in your lamp. Also, the stronger the light is, the more important it is to protect your eyes from the glare. Make sure you opt for a high-quality lamp that controls how the light is emitted (most lamps beam out light in all directions with no control).
