Before choosing graphic design courses online, there are several factors you will need to consider.

Check the time requirements for your online graphic design courseTime

Online graphic design courses can take a few hours to several months to complete. You will need to consider your commitment level when choosing a course. If you’re ready to switch careers, you’ll need more training. If you’re familiar with the field of graphic design or you just want to freelance in a specialization such as photo editing, you can usually find a couple of shorter courses that will help you transition.

Check the class schedule for your online graphic design courseAvailability

The availability of the online course on graphic design is an important factor, especially if you need to get started right away. While some courses are on-demand, some function on an academic schedule. Also, look to see if the course has a specific class time or is flexible. Choosing a course you can do on your own time can be beneficial if you have work or child care responsibilities.

What budget do you have to study graphic design online?Budget

Are you ready to invest in your new career or do you need free graphic design courses to see if design is right for you? Fortunately, both options are readily available. If you’re switching careers, consider investing in paid courses that will provide you with key information like where to find jobs, how to work with clients, and how to manage your time.

Choose a graphic design course that suits your level of skillSkill Level

Not all online graphic design courses are for beginners. Carefully read the course description to see if there are any prerequisites like software or basic design concepts. If you are new to the field, you should look into courses that provide graphic design basics and an overview of design principles. Intermediate to advanced learners can focus on courses that challenge current design knowledge and provide new techniques and design trends.

Tech requirements may include a laptop and graphic design software.Tech Requirements

Having a computer and graphic design software is a must. Although you don’t always need an expensive computer or the latest software, depending on the type of graphic design you choose, video editing, for example, the tech requirement costs can add up. You will need to invest in the proper equipment before starting any online courses. If you are unsure what to purchase, you can always ask the course creator or a graphic design mentor what they recommend.

Best Online Graphic Design Certificate Courses

Online graphic design certifications
While some graphic designers are expected to complete a bachelor’s degree, it  certainly isn’t the only way to land your dream design job.
A good number of accredited schools offer professional online graphic design certificate courses, ensuring that those who are short on funds or looking to enter the job field quicker can have a fair shot at employment after completion.
A certificate can benefit a graphic designer looking to build an up-to-date portfolio or simply add a useful skill to an existing job; for example, if you’re a social media manager, it might be useful to know how to edit photos and design posts.
Certificate programs generally consist of 8-13 courses, offer a flexible schedule so you can still work full-time if needed, and offer completion in less than 2 years.
To earn a certificate, a high school diploma or GED is typically required. Sometimes a college degree is required if the certificate is specialized.
Most certificate programs start with the basics and do not require the student to have prior knowledge of graphic design. However, some require a general knowledge of design software so it is best to check with the certification program before you begin.
You can search the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD) directory for accredited institutions or the Professional Association for Design (AIGA) for graphic design degrees and certifications by State that are NASAD accredited.
